Arab Primary School is a preschool through second grade school located in the heart of Arab, Alabama. It is one of four schools comprising Arab City Schools, which is one of the top school systems in the state.
Arab Primary School participates in the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) and was one of the original “Sweet 16” ARI pilot programs. Classroom teachers at APS receive intensive training in teaching reading and writing in order to implement research-based reading strategies in their classrooms. APS teachers are committed to developing the literacy skills of each student.
Arab Primary School is also an Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) school. Classroom teachers have participated in intensive training in order for the school to receive this designation. Math and science are taught through approaches that engage students in hands on activities and develop higher order thinking skills.
Students participate in weekly enrichment classes offered by the school. The library media center provides students with instruction in library skills, book genres, and authors. The STEM lab provides students with age-appropriate, hands-on science instruction aligned with Alabama College and Career-Ready Standards. Students receive music instruction from a certified music instructor and perform in grade level programs each year. Counseling classes are offered monthly.
Physical education is taught by a certified physical education teacher. Every student participates in physical education for thirty minutes each day. The physical education program has a heated and air-conditioned gym, a designated playground, an open field, and a fenced blacktop playground with basketball goals, bowling, hopscotch, and a variety of other activities.
