Methods of Counseling

Individual Counseling
One-on-one sessions include discussions, art and play therapy, parent conferences and teacher consultations. Usually this method is appropriate when there are private sessions to discuss or if a child seems to respond better in this atmosphere.

Small Group Counseling
These sessions include four or five children near the same age with similar concerns. Topics in these include children dealing with separation or divorce, grief from the death of a loved one, birth of a new sibling, adjusting to school environment and making new friends.

Large Group Guidance
In large group guidance, the counselor meets with each classroom about six times a year. The lessons meet objectives in the Alabama State Plan of Excellence for Guidance and Counseling.
